Overview of Workshop

SelectBIO Space Asia Workshop 2025 focuses on the emerging and expanding global efforts for research and commercialization in Space.

Emphasis at this workshop will be on efforts and projects underway in the Asia/Pacific Arena including Australia and the efforts for Flow Chemistry-Space Chemistry as well as InSpace BioManufacturing and BioProduction in Space.

Professor Volker Hessel -- University of Adelaide -- will be serving as the Chairperson of this Workshop and Presenters/Conference Speakers describe the current state of Research and Commercialization, circa 2025.

This workshop is held co-located with SelectBIO Flow Chemistry Asia 2025 -- All Participants Receive Full Access to Both Conference Programming Streams for Maximal Networking and Business Development Activities.

Orla Williams, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faulty of Engineering, University of Nottingham

Orla Williams Biographical Sketch

Dr Orla Williams is an Assistant Professor in the Advanced Materials Research Group at the University of Nottingham, specializing in biomass processing for bioenergy, mechanochemical extraction, and life cycle analysis of manufacturing and energy systems. Her Anne McLaren Fellowship (2018–2024) focused on sustainable biomass-based processing to produce critical raw materials for the circular economy. She holds an Engineering Doctorate from Nottingham (2016) on improving biomass co-firing in coal plants to reduce emissions, work that achieved measurable national carbon reductions. Prior to academia, she earned an MEng in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bath and worked as a Chartered Building Services Engineer with Buro Happold in the UK and US, as well as in roles at Rolls-Royce Defence Aerospace and the Snowdon Mountain Railway. Dr Williams serves on the editorial board of Biomass & Bioenergy and is a committee member of the UK Fuel and Energy Research Forum.

Shu Liang, ARC Centre of Excellence in Plants for Space, Adelaide University

Shu Liang Biographical Sketch

Shu Liang is about to complete her doctorate in Professor Hessel's research group and is also a member of the ARC Center of Excellence in Plants for Space. My research focuses on creating digital twins for space agriculture, which involves IoT, machine learning, and more. The results of the original study, which selected nutrient-dense food combinations for astronauts and prepared into space salads, were published in ACS, and received more than 80 news reports.

Volker Hessel, Professor, Adelaide University, Australia -- Workshop Chairperson

Volker Hessel Biographical Sketch

Professor Volker Hessel studied chemistry at Mainz University/D. 1994: Institut für Mikrotechnik Mainz/Germany (Director R&D); 2005: Professor Eindhoven University of Technology/NL; 2018: Deputy Dean (Research), Professor University of Adelaide, Australia; 2019: part-time professor University of Warwick/UK.

He is author of 678 peer-reviewed publications (h-index: 90; >37,000 citations). He received the AIChE Excellence in Process Development Research Award, IUPAC ThalesNano Prize in Flow Chemistry. He is program lead in the ARC Centre of Excellence Plants for Space (P4S), and is Research Director of the Andy Thomas Centre for Space Resources. He received several EU’s research excellence grants (ERC Advanced/Proof of Concept/Synergy, FET OPEN). He is a member on the College of Experts for the National Research Foundation (NRF) within the Prime Minister’s Office.
